LEVITICUS 10 – God executes two of the brand-newly installed priests for approaching Him in their OWN way. This is after the incredible experience of eating in Yahweh’s presence not long before this (Ex 24:9-11). Even real, awe-filled experiences / tastes of God’s presence don’t fully guard from FALSE worship. This is after the sobering warning in Lev 8:35. This is after the fire of God sobered the people just before this (in Lev 9:23-24).

Lev 10:6-7 – To show agreement with the righteousness of God’s judgment, the family members still with the anointing oil from the dedication ceremony were not to show traditional grieving while in the Tabernacle complex, nor leave it. Agreeing with God is more important than giving vent to our feelings. God has every right to command our feelings and how we express them – see also Matt 10:28, John 16:33, Phil 4:4, 4:6, 1 Thess 5:18, etc.

Lev 10:8-9 – These verses lead many to think that alcohol may well have been linked to the carelessness in v 1.

PSALM 11-12 – Psalm 11 – In my Bible’s margin I’ve written: “Encouragement for the righteous when the wicked SEEM to be winning (also see Ps 10).” Note the often repeated “upright / righteous / righteousness” through this Psalm. Bible Study tip: Derek Kidner has written excellent summaries and brief comments on every Psalm. If I could only afford one author on the Psalms, it would be him – short, approachable (you don’t have to have seminary training), and very helpful.

Ps 11:1 – The SET of the righteous heart – focused on Yahweh and taking refuge in HIM, even when others advise other options.

Ps 11:2-3 – The SCARY SITUATION. This psalm (like so many psalms) comes from a crisis.

Ps 11:4-5 – The TRUTH, whether it FEELS like this or not.

Ps 11:6 – The PRAYERFUL DESIRE of the righteous – that Yahweh will get ultimate justice. Also see Rom 12:19 – “Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, ‘Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.’”

Ps 11:7 – Closing CONFIDENT PRAISE and reminding himself of the END of the story of every believer: “Yahweh is righteous…the upright shall behold His face.” I’m reminded of the hymn “Be Thou My Vision” and Ps 17:15 – “As for me, I shall behold Your face in righteousness; when I awake, I shall be satisfied with Your likeness.” This has been called by believers “The Beatific Vision,” and is a sweet reminder that the greatest Treasure of the universe is God HIMSELF. [Online you can read a beautiful sermon about this by searching “Charles Spurgeon The Beatific Vision”.]

Psalm 12 – A psalm for when righteous people feel very much in the minority among an increasingly and proudly sinful world. Several helpful prayers and promises to encourage the believer.

Ps 12:6 – What a contrast between God’s words and those in v 3-4!

Optional Rom 3:27-4:12 – This principle of FAITH – believing in God for what HE’s said and done and that being COUNTED as righteousness on the account of the believer isn’t just for post-Jesus believers. It’s been the foundation of true saving faith all through the Scriptures, and God has Paul bring up two great illustrations from OT believers – Abraham and David. And it was true for Abraham BEFORE circumcision, so true for Jews AND Gentiles. No matter our different backgrounds, FAITH (entrusting our whole lives to the One True God, and now only as He’s revealed Himself through Jesus) is the ONLY WAY to be counted righteous (“justified”) by Holy God.

Optional Proverbs 17:20-24 – Pr 17:22 – God designed us with a close inter-connection between body and spirit! See also Ps 31:10, 38:3.
